The new version expands the framework to include AI support for decision-making, strengthens work with value streams, and more clearly links the value chain to the service lifecycle. It brings evolution, not revolution—and builds on the principles of ITIL® 4.
The change is taking place in three areas, with ITIL®5 now including:
1) AI for decision support – The new version includes artificial intelligence to assist with decision-making and process optimization.
2) Improved approach to value stream mapping – Value stream mapping is now more effective and provides better tools for tracking value flow within an organization.
3) Value chain – activities correspond to the service lifecycle – Activities within the value chain are now clearly linked to the individual phases of the service lifecycle, ensuring better process alignment.
Jorge Acosta has nicely illustrated the change between versions 4 and 5:
We are delighted that Ludmila Vráželová has become the first certified ITIL® 5 lecturer. Thanks to her, we are among the first accredited training organizations (ATOs) in the Czech Republic to actively teach the new version. Other lecturers are gradually joining us.
ITIL® 4 certification holders need not worry about their qualifications losing value. ITIL® 5 builds on and further develops the previous version. ITIL® 4 certification remains valid for 3 years.
Basic principles, such as guiding principles, management practices, and an emphasis on creating service value, remain unchanged and are further developed. Your existing knowledge is therefore fully relevant in the context of ITIL® 5, and clearly defined transformation paths are available for transitioning to the new version.
Pumpedu, one of the first educators on the market, is launching the ITIL® Foundation version 5 course. Dates are listed until the end of 2026.
