What is IPMA Level A?
IPMA Level A is the highest level of project management certification from IPMA, designed for managing strategic programs and portfolios. The certification verifies the ability to coordinate complex sets of projects in line with the organization's strategy, not just the management of a single project.
Who is IPMA Level A certification for?
It is designed for experienced managers who manage programs or portfolios of projects in a strategic level, typically with many years of experience in managing complex initiatives. This is not an entry-level position – previous experience from lower levels of IPMA or comparable practice is assumed.
How is the IPMA Level A exam conducted?
The exam at the highest level usually includes, in addition to the written part, detailed documentation of your own management experience and a personal interview with assessors. The ability to apply competencies in real-world management of strategic programs is assessed, not just theoretical knowledge.
What is the difference between IPMA Level A and IPMA Level B?
IPMA Level B focuses on managing individual complex projects, while IPMA Level A aims at managing entire programs and portfolios, such as organizations. Level A thus assumes a broader strategic overlap and responsibility for multiple related projects at once.
What is the difference between IPMA Level A and certification in program management as an MSP?
IPMA Level A assesses the competences and behavior of a manager in the context of strategic programs, similar to other IPMA levels, while methodologies as an MSP focus more on the specific process framework of program management. Both approaches complement each other. and in practice they can be combined according to the needs of the organization.
